The revelation that 300 Catholic priests had molested 1000 kids over the course of a half century in Pennsylvania is a diabolical and heartbreaking scandal. The church will need to take moral and legal accountability. That being said, the vast majority of priests - around 95% according to the most critical studies - are not pedophiles. The vast majority of the cases are from decades ago at a time when children had fewer rights and adults in general were abusive with impunity. For the past 15 years the church has adopted new policies and is better at reporting criminal priests. Most Catholics believe that what next needs to happen is to make celibacy optional and to eventually open the priesthood to women as well. What is most important, however, is making the safety of children highest priority.
