According to a recent report by 24/7 Wall Street, Indiana ranks 41st in quality of life for senior citizens out of all the 50 states. The factors examined include health, income, education level and and access to places like public transportation, libraries and hospitals. Indiana also placed 5th worst in the nation in terms of the mortality rate. These figures should lead to some soul-searching and digging deep in terms of uncovering the causes of our state's poor record sustaining the quality of life for Hoosiers as they age. My guess is that the root causes are a lack of investment in infrastructure and social programs, rampant drug abuse, and that economic grown seems to be happening mainly in the Indianapolis area. At any rate, I'm still hoping to spend the winter months in Florida when I retire.
