"BACK TO BABYSITTING?"

6/16/14 The News-Dispatch & 6/19/14 The Herald-Argus

With America seeming to have moved on from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, a group of Sunni Muslim extremists, ISIS (The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria), is emerging as a reminder that the war on terrorism truly is unending. ISIS is an anti-western, terrorist organization hoping to overthrow the Shiite governments of Iraq and Syria and replace them with a Taliban-style Muslim caliphate.

The U.S. probably won't commit troops to the region, but appears to be open to using air strikes. War-weary America is asking itself, how far do we want to go to prevent another 9-11 and are troops the answer at this point? I guess it goes back to the truth that the war on terror is like the war on crime, the war on drugs, etc. - it is not really a war but an ongoing policing of a persistent ill.

UPDATE 8/14: ISIS begins trying to systematically exterminate all non-Muslims: primarily Christians, Yadzis, and anyone else not willing to adhere to Islam. Monstrous crimes against humanity like the beheading of children and crucifixions of vulnerable, fleeing populations are demanding a stronger response from the U.S. and the world. If I were president at this point, I would (a) send troops immediately to rescue and evacuate the remaining persecuted populations from the region, and (b) proceed to militarily annihilate ISIS by any means necessary.
