Google is manufacturing a "smart car" which requires riders (they can't even be called drivers) to simply press a button if they sense the car needs to stop. It has no emergency steering wheels or brakes in case the vehicle malfunctions. I hope people in the future can continue to be free to drive their own cars rather than be completely and mindlessly dependent on the vehicles themselves. I prefer putting my life in my own hands, thank you. What makes more sense is manufacturing vehicles that will not activate unless you can prove you're sober.
People tend to fall in line and march lockstep these days when it comes to technology, seldom questioning the safety, ethics, practicality, or long-term effects of new inventions...just because you can do something, doesn't mean that you always should. 3-D printers, for instance, look like they'd be fun, but they also have great potential to reek havoc on the world's economy. People will say, "So what? Most things are made in China anyway," conveniently forgetting that the U.S. and China are at peace purely on account of our rather lopsided economic relationship...
