Indiana legislatures are introducing their own
standards for Math and English to replace Common
Core, the federal guidelines for classroom
curriculum adopted in 2010 and formally
abandoned in 2013. Indiana was the first state
to do so.
Critics say that 90% of the curriculum is the
same, the difference being that the replacement
standards will require less emphasis on things
like cultural and historical literacy, and
linking content and comprehension. Add to
that it will cost taxpayers tens of
millions of dollars over the next few school
years to make the transition.
My take is that opposition has more to do with a
"state's rights" mentality and a
kneejerk disdain for
federal control (ex. Obamacare) or at least
the appearance of federal control.
