The sorts of issues being tackled during
Indiana's legislative session thus far are
fairly petty, in the eyes of Democrats. Minority
leader Rep. Scott Pelath has expressed concerns
that lawmakers need to be addressing issues like
the state's economy and high rates of sexual
assault, rather than focusing on gay marriage,
stray cats and whether to keep or drop classes
in cursive handwriting.
The GOP would probably reply that plans to
eliminate personal property taxes on businesses
will help the economy. The trouble with that
argument is that Indiana already has a
competitive tax rate, and there is most
importantly the question of who exactly would
pick up the tab on all that lost tax revenue?
Tax cuts are fine, but it can't be a shell game
in the long run.
