57 acres of land near the Beachwalk community in
Michigan Township, mostly dunes and forest and
known as Moon Valley, is under threat of
encroaching development. Having often walked the
trails there, I can tell you it is land worth
keeping open to the public and not lost to the
endless beachside construction of luxury
property owners, most of whom are not Indiana
residents.
State Representative Scott Pelath has submitted
a bill to designate Moon Valley a state nature
preserve to be funded by the Department of
Natural Resources. At this point its fate
is up to the Indiana House Natural Resources
Committee.
I personally would enjoy seeing Moon Valley
become part of the Indiana Dunes National
Lakeshore with greater access to the public
(parking, etc.)
