Republican Congressman Todd Akin's indefensible
"legitimate rape" comments forced the GOP to
drop funding and support for him, and the
Romney-Ryan ticket to clarify its support for
legal tolerance of abortion in cases of rape,
incest, and danger to the life of the mother.
Their position, however, is at odds with the
party's "Human Life Amendment," which advances
Akin's stance of no exceptions for cases of
incest and rape.
I personally believe that for abortion to be
illegal, it is necessary to guarantee legal
exceptions in the above-mentioned cases. The
alternative is an ongoing national debate
between unethical and unreasonable extremes.
