The "Occupy Wall Street" protests that have spread from New York across the country to places as close as South Bend and Indianapolis, have touched off a national debate about plutocracy. My feeling is that while capitalism is generally a good thing, at some point it must be restrained from doing evil. Illicit forms of trading (ex. hedge funds), monopolies, pollution, offshoring to third world countries for what is all but slave labor, fraudulent lending, and even child labor (in early American history) are some solid instances of where the government needs to step in. The fantasy that all businesspeople are inherently ethical and moral is a false presupposition held by the supporters of unbridled capitalism.
