Many were amazed Bush won re-election given the scandals and the Iraq war. A big part of it, though, has to do with the fact that the Democrats need to expand their umbrella to become more inclusive of social conservatives. Churches were mobilizing Republicans to vote on the basis of issues like abortion or gay marriage, instead of the everyday bread-and-butter issues that work in Democrat's favor.
